PREGNANCY CENTERING
____________________________________________________________________________________________
How does pregnancy centring work?
You are part of a group of 8 to 12 pregnant women with similar due dates. A total of 10 group appointments take place. The intervals between appointments are the same as for conventional antenatal care. Each group appointment lasts two hours. The composition of the group remains the same throughout the pregnancy.
All the necessary check-ups are carried out at each appointment and there is time and space for discussions on all topics relating to pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. There is also time to get to know each other privately and exchange ideas.
The appointments are led by two midwives. Specific topics are planned for each appointment, e.g. physical and emotional changes during pregnancy, nutrition, exercise, breastfeeding and much more that concerns pregnant women during this time. These topics can be adapted to the wishes of the group at any time.
Will I receive all the examinations that are carried out during the usual antenatal care?
Yes, all medical examinations are carried out that also take place during conventional screening. This means that the conventional screening appointments, which do not include an ultrasound, will be replaced by the group appointments. The scheduled ultrasound examinations will continue to be carried out by your gynaecologist.
If situations arise during your pregnancy that need to be clarified, your midwife will refer you to your gynaecologist. In this case, you can still take part in all group sessions.
Are there advantages or disadvantages?
We hope that the group antenatal care will give you the opportunity to meet people who are at a similar point in their lives to you. Studies and experiences from other countries have shown that pregnant women feel strengthened by this exchange. They can benefit from the valuable mutual support and sometimes new friendships develop.
Studies have also shown that pregnant women in this model are less likely to have a premature birth. It is less common for the baby to be too light or to have to be transferred to a neonatal unit after birth due to problems.
You may find that you don't feel comfortable in the group or that you can't make the time for the two-hour appointments. If this is the case, you can return to conventional provision at any time.
